Unraveling Memories
This installation explores the theme of nostalgia, creating an interactive space that evokes childhood memories—whether real or imagined. The piece combines various artistic media to immerse the viewer in the experience.
When you first see the piece, there is a painting of a person trapped inside the stomach of a stuffed animal, symbolizing the complex relationship between comfort and confinement in childhood. Inside the fort below the painting are four homemade “monsters”--a mix of creations I made, objects I found, and gifts from people that are important to me. These monsters carry personal histories to me and invite viewers to connect with their own pasts.
The installation transforms into an intimate sanctuary reminiscent of a childhood bedroom. Upon entering, viewers are encouraged to interact with the stuffed animals by picking them up and pressing their corresponding buttons on a small keyboard. Each button triggers a projected video of the animal, which morphs into a spinning 3D model made of millions of lines. The models continuously deconstruct and reconstruct, representing the fragile and shifting nature of childhood memories as they fade and reform over time.
The motif of deconstruction is echoed throughout the space, with yarn, deconstructed fabrics, and strings woven into the environment. These elements tie the experience together, enveloping viewers in a tactile representation of memory’s ever changing, yet enduring, presence.
